Sūrat aṭ-Ṭāriq
Observations on the organization and structure of Sūrat aṭ-Ṭāriq
Sūrat aṭ-Ṭāriq (The Night Comer) is a Makkan sūrah which reminds mankind that they will stand before Allah ﷻ on Judgment Day, and that the Quran is not something that can be overcome. It has been shown that the sūrah can be organized into a parallel structure.1
Summarized by section:
CONNECTIONS
[A]/[A’] – The beginning of the sūrah (was-samā’i waṭ-ṭāriq, By the sky and the night comer) has many interpretations, but one widely accepted one is that, that which comes down from the sky and acts as a protector are angels. They descend from the heavens and record our deeds. This is similar to how the second half starts (was-samā’i dhā tir-rajʿi, By the sky which returns). Both begin with oaths related to the creation above us, and both allude to otherworldly affairs. Aṭ-Ṭāriq can be referring to the angels or stars, and that which returns to the sky can be prayers, rain (which is an allegory for revelation throughout the Quran), or possibly a callback to the angels again, going back to report what they found us doing.
[B]/[B’] – Allah ﷻ reminds us of our humble origins. We were nothing but a dirty fluid, without strength or agency. Contrast this with the powerful language of “the earth which cracks open [with plants and life],” and with the “decisive” Quran whose power and purpose is not even joked about.
[C]/[C’] - Finally, both halves conclude speaking of secrets. There are the secrets that will be revealed on the Day of Judgment as well as the secret plans of those plotting against the Messenger ﷺ. In either case, they “will have no power or any helper,” so the Messenger ﷺ )and all of us, by extension) are being told to not overly worry about their scheming because Allah ﷻ has a better plan, so it is best to “leave them awhile.”
Another proposal suggests that the sūrah may actually be organized into a ring structure.2
CONNECTIONS
[D]/[D’] – Based on another accepted interpretation of the “piercing star” mentioned in the opening āyāt,3 it can be said the first section is about the stars that attack the disobedient jinn attempting to ascertain information that does not belong to them. Similarly, the sūrah ends speaking about how Allah ﷻ has a plan for the disbelievers who are plotting against the believers.
[E]/[E’] – The angels as guardians over us, who protect us and record our deeds, are compared to the decisive Quran which teaches us how to be protected in this life and the next, as well as informs us of the best deeds to perform and avoid.
[F]/[F’] – The humbling creation of man is contrasted with the powerful creation of the plants on earth.
[G]/[G’] – Allah’s amazing ability to resurrect us effortlessly is distinct from man who has “no power or any helper.”
[H] – At the center is the crux of the entire sūrah; all secrets will be laid bare on the Day of Judgment. The secrets that the jinn tried to steal, the secret plots of the disbelievers, the hidden angels by our side, our record of deeds, and much more will be clear on that Day. And it is because of this that we should know our place as humble beings before Allah ﷻ, and submit before that time comes.
And Allah ﷻ knows best.

Special thanks to Jimoh Dhikrulahi who me emailed this structure proposal in Oct 2022. Only took me 2 years to post it :)
See 37:6-7 – “Indeed, We have adorned the nearest heaven with an adornment of stars (6) And as protection against every rebellious devil (7).”
And also see 67:5 – “And We have certainly beautified the nearest heaven with stars and have made [from] them what is thrown at the devils and have prepared for them the punishment of the Blaze. (5)”
