Sūrat al-Isrā' (Part 13)
Final part of observations on the organization and structure of Sūrat al-Isrā'
This is a continuation of our series on Sūrat al-Isrā’. Check out last week’s post for Part 12.
Returning to the initial proposal of the macro-structure of the sūrah, we can now better appreciate the connections between the mirrored sections.
CONNECTIONS
[A]/[A’] – The beginning and end of the sūrah both make reference to the praise of Allah ﷻ, His messengers, and the special revelation He gave each of them.
[B]/[B’] – The first time the history of the Israelites is mentioned, Allah ﷻ recalls two times in their history when they were overwhelmed by outside forces when they become corrupt. In contrast, the conclusion reminds us of their original history of when Moses was able to overcome the tyrannical Pharaoh.
[C]/[C’] – Both sections place a great emphasis on the role and status of the Quran and link that to how Allah ﷻ guides us and will pass judgment.
[D]/[D’] – Both sections speak of the “faḍl (favor)” of Allah ﷻ and reminds us that our actions have consequences. The section from the first half of the sūrah notes the destruction of nations and the second half warns of our own potential destruction.
[E]/[E’] – The first section outlines a list of commands which, if ignored, take one far away from Allah’s pleasure. Linked with this passage is the one describing Satan as our clear enemy; as he is the one who will try and convince us to reject Allah’s commandments.
[F]/[F’] – The center of the sūrah appears to reflect how the sūrah began and ended as well. Allah ﷻ is praised by all and everything, even in the Afterlife, and the only ones not praising Him are those who reject the Quran and are in denial of the life to come.
And Allah ﷻ knows best.
Wow, that took forever. If Allah ﷻ gives me life, the goal is to begin Sūrat al-Aḥzāb next week!
