Sūrat al-Isrā' (Part 11)
Part 11 of observations on the organization and structure of Sūrat al-Isrā'
Wow, 300 posts later, here we are. Still no book though. But, surely it’s almost ready. Surely…
This is a continuation of our series on Sūrat al-Isrā’. Check out last week’s post for Part 10.
As a reminder, here is the proposed structure for the overall sūrah.
Section [B’] – History of Israelites (100-104) seems to form a ring structure.
CONNECTIONS
[B4]/[B4’] – The disbelievers are described as so stingy that if they had access to Allah’s infinite mercy, they would still withhold it. The end of this passage mentions the Day Allah ﷻ will dispense the most mercy; the Day of Judgment.
[B5]/[B5’] – Moses receives nine signs which he uses to convince Pharaoh of his message. Allah ﷻ then implores us to ask the Children of Israel what happened during that encounter. Similarly, the mirrored section tells us about Pharaoh’s reaction to receiving the nine signs and also answers the question of what happened to the Children of Israel.
[B6]/[B6’] – There is a contrast between Pharaoh telling Moses, “Innī la’ẓunnu-ka yā (Indeed, I think of you) Moses to be affected by magic,” and Moses telling Pharaoh back, “Wa Innī la’ẓunnu-ka yā (And indeed, I think of you) Pharaoh as destroyed.”
[B7] – The center of the ring succinctly summarizes the themes of the outer sections through Moses telling Pharaoh, “You have already known that none has sent down these [signs] except the Lord of the heavens and the earth as evidence.” Allah ﷻ, in His mercy, sent down signs on behalf of the Children of Israel to warn Pharaoh, but instead of accepting the signs, he challenged Moses and lost.
We’ll continue in Part 12 next week.
