Sūrat al-Aḥzāb (Part 5)
Final part of observations on the structure and cohesion of Sūrat al-Aḥzāb
This is Part 5 on the structure of Sūrat al-Aḥzāb (The Coalition Forces). See last week week’s post for Part 4.
As a reminder, here is the structure under discussion:
CONNECTIONS
[AD]/[AD’] – The Messenger ﷺ is praised as an ultimate role model and someone whose example should be followed. Interestingly, the later section mentions a particular action—female modesty—which the Messenger ﷺ cannot personally model himself, though we look to his family to see how best to do it.
[AE]/[AE’] – The praise and promise of reward towards the true believers is complemented in the later section when Allah ﷻ mentions His humiliating punishment for those who would work to harm them.
[AF]/[AF’] – The Muslims are described as totally dominating their enemies. In connection to this, Allah ﷻ says of those who abuse Allah and His Messenger, “Allah has cursed them in this world and the Hereafter and prepared for them a humiliating punishment.”
[AG]/[AG’] – The first half of the sūrah outlines the expectations upon the Messenger’s family. There is a certain level of faith and behavior that they are beholden to above others. In the other half, the expectations are outlined for the Messenger’s family. In other words, how should believers be interacting with his family? It culminates in our ultimate show of respect towards the Messenger when Allah ﷻ says, “Indeed, Allah confers blessing upon the Prophet, and His angels [ask Him to do so]. Believers, ask [Allah to confer] blessing upon him and ask [Allah to grant him] safety and security.”
[AH]/[AH’] – The lengthy āyah which lists out all the special qualities of a believer is matched with the special dispensations afforded only to the Messenger ﷺ because of his special status.
[AI]/[AI’] – Allah ﷻ clearly states, “It is not for a believing man or a believing woman, when Allah and His Messenger have decided a matter, that they should [thereafter] have any choice about their affair. And whoever disobeys Allah and His Messenger has certainly strayed into clear error.” The connected āyāt reiterate the points. First, Allah ﷻ repeats, “Don’t obey the disbelievers and hypocrites…” and follows it with a command to believers that we are all obligated to follow, whether we like it or not.
[AJ]/[AJ’] – Allah ﷻ gives commentary on the marriage of the Messenger ﷺ to Zaynab, which at the time of revelation, was one of the most controversial events in the life of the Prophet ﷺ as it went against so many of the cultural norms of the Arabs. However, the Messenger ﷺ had to go through this ordeal for the greater good of the future Muslim community because, as is emphasized in the paired āyāt, he is a witness, bringing of good news, a warner, one who invites to Allah, and an illuminating lamp for us all. He is our prophet, and as such, he is our example and guiding light.
[AK]/[AK’] – With this proposed structuring, the center now focuses on the juxtaposition between how believers call out to Allah ﷻ, and how He reciprocates in an infinitely better way by mentioning us in the company of angels and directly addressing us in Paradise.
And Allah ﷻ knows best.
