Sūrat al-Aḥzāb (Part 4)
Part 4 of observations on the structure and cohesion of Sūrat al-Aḥzāb
This is Part 4 on the structure of Sūrat al-Aḥzāb (The Coalition Forces). See the post from two weeks ago for Part 3.
Combining the efforts of the above two structures, I propose my own mirror structure with a bit more granularity.
CONNECTIONS
[W]/[W’] – The sūrah opens with a direct command to the Messenger ﷺ to “be conscious of Allah.” This complements the closing where Allah ﷻ tells us that He “accepts the repentance from the believing men and women. And Allah has always been Forgiving and Merciful.” Those believers that are worthy of repentance are those who fear Allah ﷻ enough to turn back to Him.
[X]/[X’] – The prohibition of obeying the disbelievers and hypocrites is paired with Allah’s punishing of the hypocrites and polytheists.
[Y]/[Y’] – Instead of following the disbelievers, as prohibited in the previous āyah, Allah ﷻ gives the alternative instruction to follow Revelation and to fully rely on Him. On the other end of the sūrah, Allah ﷻ mentions a different kind of “Trust,” one of reason and moral responsibility. The heavens, the earth, and the mountains were offered it, but they all declined. Instead, mankind took it on. Others opine the Trust is the Quran itself, which lend itself more to the connection. We should follow what was revealed to us, as we asked for it, and need it to trust Allah ﷻ properly.
[Z]/[Z’] – The next few āyāt correct us with regards to how we address people. The station of wife, mother, adopted son, and wife of the Messenger ﷺ are all defined and all other associations and names are to be disregarded. This couples nicely with Allah’s command to “fear Allah and speak in a direct fashion and to a good purpose.” How we speak matters.
[AA]/[AA’] – Allah ﷻ tells us about how all prophets took a covenant with Him. In particular he mentions “Noah, Abraham, Moses, and Jesus, the son of Mary.” He did so in order to “question the truthful about their sincerity.” This helps to explain Allah’s warning towards the tail end of the sūrah where Allah ﷻ says, “Believers, don’t be like those who abused Moses; then Allah cleared him of what they said. And he, in the sight of Allah, was always distinguished.” Moses was one of those highlighted for taking the covenant, and it’s because of his fulfillment that Allah ﷻ clears his name.
[AB]/[AB’] – The arrival of the disbelieving coalition forces is a chance for Allah ﷻ to remind us of the various blessings He sent down. Instead of focusing on the enemy, Allah ﷻ uses this as an opportunity to speak to the strengths and advantages of the believers. On the opposite end of the sūrah, Allah ﷻ shows us the consequences and negative side of the Day of Judgment. In particular, He appropriately highlights a group of people in the Fire who blame their worldly leaders for their torment and are quoted, “Our Lord, indeed we obeyed our masters and our dignitaries, and they led us astray from the [right] way. Our Lord, give them double the punishment and curse them with a great curse."
Another interesting connection is in the opening āyah of the latter section, “People ask you concerning the Hour. Say, ‘Knowledge of it is only with Allah. And what may make you perceive? Perhaps the Hour is near.’” The mention of the Hour finds many parallels in the language of the earlier section. Allah ﷻ describes the believers, “…when eyes shifted [in fear], and hearts reached the throats and you assumed about Allah [various] assumptions. There the believers were tested and shaken with a severe shaking.”
The “eyes shifting in fear” is found elsewhere describing denizens of Hell.1 The “hearts reaching the throats” recalls the “soul reaching the throat” at one’s death (and beginning of their judgment).2 And being “shaken with a severe shaking” is a clear parallel with the famous opening of Sūrat al-Zalzalah, which illustrates the tumultuous earthquake which will mark the Day of Judgment.3
[AC]/[AC’] – In both halves, Allah ﷻ calls out the three groups of enemies—the hypocrites and those in whose hearts is disease and those who spread rumors—for their actions and inactions.
