Sūrat al-Aḥzāb (Part 3)
Part 3 of observations on the structure and cohesion of Sūrat al-Aḥzāb
This is Part 3 on the structure of Sūrat al-Aḥzāb (The Coalition Forces). See last week’s post for Part 2.
The second proposed macro-view of the sūrah is an equally detailed ring structure, also spanning the entire 73 āyāt.1
CONNECTIONS
[A]/[A’] – The sūrah begins and ends with a warning about following the disbelievers, hypocrites, and polytheists. Additionally, there is an emphasis on believers to follow what Allah ﷻ revealed and to trust ourselves to Him completely, as it is in line with the Trust we agreed to bear as humans, over all other creatures.
[B]/[B’] – Allah ﷻ gives many examples of things mankind gives inappropriate labels to. We call them one thing, but to Allah ﷻ they have more appropriate titles and names. This pairs with Allah ﷻ commanding us to “speak with straightforward words.” In return, He promises to correct our deeds and to forgive our sins.
[C]/[C’] – Allah ﷻ speaks at length about the honor and reverence we should give the Messenger ﷺ, so much so, that even his wives are given a higher station of respect. The Messenger ﷺ is part of a long line of prophets that took a covenant with Allah ﷻ, and did their utmost to successfully fulfill it. Contrast this with how He reminds us to not be like the followers of Prophet Moses. They abused Prophet Moses, though Allah ﷻ cleared him of what they said because he, like the aforementioned prophets, fulfilled his part of the covenant.
[D]/[D’] – The arrival of the disbelieving coalition forces is a chance for Allah ﷻ to remind us of the various blessings He sent down. Instead of focusing on the enemy, Allah ﷻ uses this as an opportunity to speak to the strengths and advantages of the believers. On the opposite end of the sūrah, Allah ﷻ shows us the consequences and negative side of the Day of Judgment. In particular, He appropriately highlights a group of people in the Fire who blame their worldly leaders for their torment and are quoted, “Our Lord, indeed we obeyed our masters and our dignitaries, and they led us astray from the [right] way. Our Lord, give them double the punishment and curse them with a great curse."
[E]/[E’] – In both halves, Allah ﷻ calls out the three groups of enemies—“the hypocrites and those in whose hearts is disease and those who spread rumors”—for their actions and inactions.
[F]/[F’] – The Messenger ﷺ is praised as an ultimate role model and someone whose example should be followed. Interestingly, the later section mentions a particular action—female modesty—which the Messenger ﷺ cannot personally model himself, though we look to his family to see how best to do it.
[G]/[G’] – The praise and promise of reward towards the true believers is complemented in the later section when Allah ﷻ mentions His humiliating punishment for those who would work to harm them.
[H]/[H’] – The Muslims are described as totally dominating their enemies. In connection to this, Allah ﷻ says of those who abuse Allah and His Messenger, “Allah has cursed them in this world and the Hereafter and prepared for them a humiliating punishment.”
[I]/[I’] – The first section is directed towards the wives of the Messenger ﷺ, explaining their situation and station in life. The complementary section is addressed towards the believers, and reminds them of how they are to treat the Messenger ﷺ and his family.
[J]/[J’] – Allah ﷻ gives two different descriptions of special qualities. The first is for believing men and women, highlighting all the possible ways we may distinguish ourselves as Muslims. Similarly, Allah ﷻ speaks to the Messenger ﷺ and tells him of all the special qualities and rules that apply to him. Rules that distinguish him as a messenger of Allah ﷻ, and that do not apply to anyone else.
[K]/[K’] – Both sections concern marriage and divorce, but the earlier one is in particular to the Messenger’s life, while the latter is in regards to all Muslims.
[L]/[L’] – The penultimate section commands us to mention Allah ﷻ as often as we can. On the other side of the ring is a description of the Messenger ﷺ as someone who reminds us of Allah ﷻ and of our potential reward with Him.
[M] – At the center of this beautiful sūrah is Allah ﷻ mentioning the believers, praising them, and, on the Day of Judgment, addressing us directly with an honorable greeting of “Salām (a state free of fault; peace).”
And Allah ﷻ knows best.
